Doctor Biography

Dr. Niaz Abdur-Rahman is presently the Managing Director of Bangladesh Eye Hospital and a Vitreo Retina Surgeon. He is the pioneer in the field of Vitreo Retina in Bangladesh. He hails from Barisal and was born in Dhaka. Early education was at Dhaka and in 1973 he obtained Senior Cambridge 'O' Level degree. Then he went to England from where he completed 'A" level of the Oxford University. In 1982 Dr. Niaz Rahman obtained his medical graduation of the University of Dhaka from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barisal. After one year internship at IPGM&R, he joined Islamia Eye Hospital in 1983 as a resident and worked for 21 years holding the post of consultant for the last 12 years. In 1986 he obtained his Diploma in Ophthalmology degree of the University of Dhaka from the National Institute of Ophthalmology.

He went to USA with the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship and obtained a Masters of Public Health Degree with special emphasis to Public Health Ophthalmology from the Johns Hopkins University. From 1990 to 1992 he was at the University of British Columbia, Canada as a full time Clinical Retina Vitreous Fellow and received Fellowship and extensive training in retina vitreous surgery, laser photocoagulation and angiographic techniques

His major interest has been in the field of Retina Vitreous. In 1988 he pioneered the first Retina Clinic in Bangladesh at Islamia Eye Hospital. With the help of ORBIS the flying eye hospital, Dr. Niaz Rahman performed the first vitrectomy operation in a Bangladeshi Institute, at Islamia Eye Hospital.

On his return to Bangladesh in 1992, he rejoined Islamia Eye Hospital and since then developed the first Retina Clinic in the country to render a high level of medical and surgical service for posterior segment disorders of the eye.

By his personal endeavour, he has founded the Retina Foundation and Eye Center in Dhaka. This Center played a major role in delivering eye care related to posterior segment disorders in the country. The Center is fully equipped with the latest technology and for the last decade had been involved in major educational programs for the Ophthalmologist's of the country.

From his early days, Dr. Niaz Abdur-Rahman has been involved in quite a few social and charitable organisations, and has held key positions in all of them - as the Interact Club, the Rotaract Club. Regarding professional organisations he has been in the executive committee of the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh since 1994 and also in the executive committee of the Bangladesh Eye Care Society for many years. He held the important posts of Organizing Secretary and Joint Secretary General of OSB. Since 1992 he played an important role in organising and executing all major scientific programmes of the OSB - especially the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Conference and the SAARC Conference at Dhaka. Through his singular effort, major cataract workshops for all ophthalmologists of the country, with live surgery by foreign experts of the sub continent has been periodically arranged.

In 2004, along with a group of highly trained ophthalmologists, Dr. Niaz Abdur-Rahman founded the Bangladesh Eye Hospital. This is a unique endeavour as it is the only sub-speciality based tertiary care eye hospital in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Eye Hospital offers the most sophisticated treatment having state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipments with a faculty of specialists par excellence. Dr. Niaz is widely travelled and attended over 60 international conferences and retina workshops. He has a large number of national and international publications and has been a speaker in a number of international meetings as the American Academy, the Asia Pacific Academy, the SAARC Ophthalmological Meetings, All India Ophthalmology Society meetings.

He has instructed instruction courses in the ICO World Congress of Ophthalmology, Asia Pacific Academy Of Ophthalmology and in many other Conferences in the Indian Sub-Continent. He is involved in research both in clinical and public health ophthalmology. He underwent Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship- awarded by USAID for one year academics in USA. He has been awarded Citation award for meritorious service in 1985 from Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh, the 5th Prof. M. A. Matin Gold Medal in 1996, the Mabarak Ali Gold Medal in 2010 and the Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Award by APAO in 2012.

He has a varied extracurricular interest and leads a very active life. Dr. Niaz Abdur-Rahman is married and has a happy family with a caring, supportive and devoted wife, one son and two daughters.
